Aurasin acute contains zolmitriptan. It belongs to a group of medicines called triptans.
Aurasin acute is used after the initial diagnosis of migraine by a doctor for the acute treatment of the headache phases of migraine attacks with or without aura.

Migraine symptoms can be caused by a temporary dilation of the blood vessels in the head. Zolmitriptan is thought to reduce this dilation. This helps the headache and other symptoms of a migraine attack, such as nausea or vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound, go away.

Zolmitriptan only works if a migraine attack has already begun. It cannot prevent a migraine attack and should not be taken to prevent a migraine.

Contraindications

Aurasin akut must NOT be taken if

  • You are allergic to zolmitriptan, menthol or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
  • You have high blood pressure that is difficult to treat or your blood pressure is poorly controlled.
  • You have ever had heart problems including heart attack, angina (chest pain caused by exercise or exertion) and Prinzmetal's angina (chest pain that occurs when you are resting) or have suffered from other heart-related problems such as shortness of breath or pressure in your chest
  • you have had a stroke or experienced temporary symptoms similar to a stroke (transient ischemic attacks)
  • You have serious kidney problems
  • You are taking other medicines to treat or prevent your migraines (e.g. ergotamine or ergot-type medicines such as dihydroergotamine and methysergide) or other triptan-type migraine medicines. See also the section below entitled “Taking Aurasin akut together with other medicines”.

If you are not sure whether any of the above applies to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

If any of the above points apply to you: tell your doctor or pharmacist and do not take Aurasin acute.

Taking Aurasin acutely during the aura phase (phase that precedes the headache) to prevent migraine headaches is not recommended. The medicine should be taken during the headache phase of migraine.

Children, adolescents and older patients
Aurasin acute should not be used if you are younger than 18 years or older than 65 years.
As with other migraine treatments, excessive use of Aurasin may cause acute daily headaches or make your migraine headaches worse. Talk to your doctor if you think this is happening to you. You may need to stop using Aurasin acutely to resolve this problem.

Interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.

The effect of Aurasin acute may be influenced or side effects may occur if you take other medicines at the same time. In particular, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • Medicines for the treatment of migraines
    • If you are taking triptans other than Aurasin acute, wait 24 hours before taking Aurasin acute.
    • After you have taken Aurasin acutely, wait 24 hours before taking triptans other than Aurasin acutely.
    • If you are taking medicines containing ergotamine or medicines of the ergotamine type (e.g. dihydroergotamine or methysergide), you must wait 24 hours before taking Aurasin akut.
    • After using Aurasin akut, you must wait 6 hours before taking ergotamine or ergot-type medicines
  • Medicines to treat depression
    • so-called SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), such as fluoxetine
    • so-called SNRIs (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), such as venlafaxine and duloxetine
  • Other medicines
    • Cimetidine (medicine used to treat indigestion or stomach ulcers)
    • Antibiotics of the quinolone type, such as ciprofloxacin.

If you are taking herbal preparations containing St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum), side effects from Aurasin akut may occur more frequently.

pregnancy and breast feeding period

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

  • The safety of using Aurasin acutely during pregnancy has not been proven. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant before taking Aurasin acute.
  • You must not breastfeed for 24 hours after taking Aurasin akut.

Ability to drive and use machines

Caution: This medicine can impair your ability to react and drive.

During a migraine attack, your reactions may be slower than usual. Keep this in mind when driving a vehicle or operating any equipment or machinery.

Aurasin akut is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or operate equipment or machines. However, you should wait and see how you react to taking Aurasin akut before attempting any of these activities.

Application

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Take Aurasin acute only to treat an actual migraine attack and not to prevent migraine attacks or headaches. You can take Aurasin acutely as soon as the migraine attack begins. Aurasin acute is still effective during the attack.

  • The usual dose is 1 tablet.
  • Take the tablet with a glass of water.
  • If migraine symptoms return within 24 hours of the first response to the medicine, you can take another tablet. However, at least 2 hours must have passed between your first and your second tablet.
  • If your migraine attack does not go away, do not take more than one tablet for the same attack.

If these tablets do not help you sufficiently during a migraine attack, tell your doctor. Your doctor may increase the dose to 5 mg or change your treatment.

Do not take more than two doses per day. If you use 2.5 mg tablets, the maximum daily dose is 5 mg. If you have been prescribed 5 mg tablets, the maximum daily dose is 10 mg.

Patients with impaired liver function
If you have moderately or severely impaired liver function, you should not take more than one 2.5 mg tablet in 24 hours.

Please consult your doctor if

  • Your headache lasts longer than 24 hours
  • You suffer from 4 or more migraine attacks per month
  • the pattern of your symptoms has changed
  • Your attacks become more frequent, last longer or are more severe, or if you cannot fully recover between attacks.
