Talcid is an antacid.
Excessive activity of stomach acid and pepsin (a digestive enzyme that breaks down protein) can lead to stomach pressure, acid disorders and gastric mucosal damage. It is therefore important to normalize the concentration of gastric acid and the amount of pepsin. Talcid maintains normal pepsin and acidity levels for extended periods by quickly and sustainably binding excess stomach acid. Pepsin activity is permanently inhibited. Stressful belching, post-acidification or an influence on the acid-base balance in the organism do not occur after Talcid. Talcid adjusts the acid environment in the stomach to the optimal range (pH 3 - 5) for the treatment very quickly and within 1 1/2 hours.

The application takes place at

  • Heartburn and other stomach problems caused by stomach acid
  • Stomach and small intestine ulcers (Ulcus Ventriculi and Ulcus Duodeni) after consultation with the attending physician.

Since Talcid contains only 0.0086 bread units (BE) per tablet and is sodium-free, it can also be taken by diabetics and patients with high blood pressure.

Contraindications

Talcid chewable tablets should not be taken

  • if you are allergic to hydrotalcite or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6).
  • if your kidney function is severely impaired
  • if the level of phosphate in your blood is too low (hypophosphataemia)
  • if you have a history of myasthenia gravis (a rare autoimmune disease with exercise-related severe muscle weakness).

interactions

Simultaneously taking certain drugs (e.g. the antibiotics tetracycline, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin, coumarin derivatives (blood thinners), H2 receptor blockers, iron preparations, digoxin (medicine for heart failure), chenodeoxycholic acid (medicine for gallstones), cimetidine (stomach protection) and sodium fluoride) with Talcid reduces their absorption. You can no longer work as a result. Therefore, you must not take Talcid with these medicines.

Therefore, you should generally leave at least 2 hours between taking other medicines and Talcid.

Taking Talcid Chewable Tablets with food and drink
Simultaneous intake of acidic foods (eg wine, fruit juices,...) leads to an increased absorption of aluminium. You should therefore not take Talcid at the same time as acidic foods.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. Aluminum compounds pass through the placenta into the unborn child's circulatory system and into breast milk. Reports of harmful effects of hydrotalcite during pregnancy and breastfeeding have not become known, but Talcid chewable tablets may only be used during pregnancy for a short period of time in order to avoid possible aluminum exposure of the unborn child.

application

Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose for adults and adolescents is at

  • Heartburn and other gastric disorders caused by stomach acid: 1-2 chewable tablets as needed.
  • Stomach and small intestine ulcers: 2 chewable tablets 3-4 times a day after meals and at bedtime. Treatment should be continued for at least 4 weeks after the symptoms have subsided.
The chewable tablets should be chewed well.

A total daily dose of 12 chewable tablets must not be exceeded.

If the symptoms persist for more than two weeks during the therapy, they should be clarified by your doctor in order to rule out a possible organic disease.

Use in children and adolescents: There are no data in children under 12 years of age.

side effects

Occasionally (in up to 10 patients in 1,000 treated)
slight nausea and loose stools can be observed at high doses. These side effects go away immediately when you stop taking it. If you take too much Talcid, you may experience loose stools, increased frequency of stools, vomiting or diarrhea.

Not known (cannot be estimated from the available data):

  • Constipation.
  • Allergic reactions can occur.
  • The phosphate content in the blood can be reduced and the magnesium content increased.
  • Long-term treatment with high doses can lead to impaired bone formation as a result of reduced absorption of phosphates from food.
  • In patients with kidney dysfunction, long-term treatment with high doses of aluminum can lead to aluminum poisoning with the risk of osteomalacia (metabolic disorder with softening of bones), encephalopathy (brain disease), or reduced blood magnesium levels with effects on the heart and nervous system or reduced phosphate levels in the blood.
