Desitin ointment 20 g

Desitin ointment with the active ingredients cod liver oil and zinc oxide is a long-established remedy for supporting wound healing. Cod liver oil is rich in vitamin A and unsaturated fatty acids. Vitamin A is particularly important in protecting the epithelia of the skin and mucous membrane tissue. Providing the skin with vitamin A helps to maintain the functionality of this tissue, increases its resistance and thus prevents inflammation. If the skin is already damaged, regeneration of the corresponding skin areas is accelerated by the vitamin-containing cod liver oil. The anti-inflammatory effect is an important property of zinc oxide. Zinc oxide also has a good drying effect and is therefore particularly suitable for weeping skin areas.

Desitin ointment is a wound and healing ointment that contains cod liver oil and zinc oxide as active ingredients. The cod liver oil it contains is rich in vitamin A and unsaturated fatty acids and thus stimulates new tissue formation. Zinc oxide has disinfectant and absorbent properties.

Areas of application:
To support wound healing in superficial inflammatory skin diseases (e.g. weeping inflammation in the area of ​​the body folds, skin irritations in the diaper region) as well as in minor burns (e.g. mild sunburn).

Contraindications

Desitin ointment must not be used if you are allergic to cod liver oil, zinc oxide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6.

Interactions

Using Desitin ointment together with other medicines
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using any other medicines, have recently taken/used any other medicines or might take/use any other medicines.

The simultaneous use of Desitin ointment and other externally applied medicines (such as antibiotics, dithranol or salicylic acid-containing medicines) on the same skin areas can impair their effect.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are or are thinking of becoming pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

Desitin ointment can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but large areas of application should be avoided. Desitin ointment must not be applied to the breast while breastfeeding.

Application

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or exactly as your doctor or pharmacist tells you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

For application on the skin.

Apply Desitin ointment several times a day in the thickness of a knife directly to the affected skin areas or to clean bandages and place on the wound area to be treated. The edges of the wound should be covered with a finger's width. Ointment residues around the wound can be removed with surgical spirit or pure vegetable oil.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.

Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders
Very rare (less than 1 in 10,000 people treated):

• Allergies with skin rash. In such cases, Desitin ointment should no longer be used.

Not known (frequency cannot be estimated from available data):

• Temporary change in skin color due to zinc oxide.
• Temporary skin flaking after long-term use due to the vitamin A contained in cod liver oil.
• Local skin irritation (e.g. contact dermatitis) as well as irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes caused by some components of Desitin ointment.
