Hexetidine, the active ingredient in Hexoral, has a broad spectrum of activity against bacterial pathogens that cause mouth and throat infections. Hexoral also effectively combats fungal diseases in the mouth and throat, especially thrush.

Hexoral is suitable for short-term supportive treatment of:

    • non-febrile inflammation of the mouth and throat
    • Sore throat with mild, non-febrile colds
    • Inflammation of the gums, bleeding gums, pressure points in denture wearers
    • Mouth rot and minor injuries in the mouth area

In the case of the following illnesses, in which fever can also occur, Hexoral should only be used under medical supervision:

    • Tonsillitis, pharyngitis, angina
    • Inflammation of the gums or oral mucosa, aphthous ulcers (painful, inflamed areas of the mucous membrane of the gums, oral cavity or tongue)
    • Prevention and treatment of infections during surgical procedures (e.g. tooth extraction or tonsillectomy)
    • Treatment of fungal diseases, especially thrush
    • Combating bad breath in serious diseases of the mouth and throat (e.g. tumors)
    • Oral hygiene for serious general illnesses

For use on children aged 3 and over, adolescents and adults.

    Contraindications

    Hexoral must not be used

    • if you are allergic to hexetidine, azorubine, levomenthol, eucalyptus oil or any of the other ingredients of this medicine listed in section 6.
    • because of the levomenthol content in patients with bronchial asthma or other respiratory diseases that are associated with pronounced hypersensitivity of the airways. In this case, inhaling Hexoral can cause shortness of breath or trigger an asthma attack.
    • in infants, toddlers and children under 3 years of age.
    • in people who are likely to swallow the mouthwash solution.
    • for ulcers and erosive, scaly changes in the oral mucosa.

    Interactions

    Using Hexoral with other medicines
Tell your doctor, dentist or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.

The active ingredient hexetidine is inactivated by soaps and other anionic substances, which are usually also contained in toothpaste.
These should therefore not be used at the same time, but before rinsing your mouth with Hexoral. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water between brushing your teeth and using Hexoral.

    Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor, dentist or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.

There is no sufficient experience or research on the safety of using Hexoral during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Therefore, you should only use Hexoral with particular caution and not exceed the recommended dosage.

    Application

Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or exactly as discussed with your doctor, dentist or pharmacist. Ask your doctor, dentist or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Adults and young people aged 12 and over.
Rinse the oral cavity with 1 tablespoon of undiluted Hexoral for about 30 seconds in the morning and evening or gargle in the throat and then spit it out. You can also apply the solution directly with swabs to individual areas of inflammation. Swallowing the solution should be avoided.

Children from 3 to 12 years of age
Dab the affected areas with a Hexoral-soaked cotton swab in the morning and evening after meals (do not wipe or rub). Use a maximum of 3 times daily.
Children aged 3 to 6 years may only be treated with Hexoral after consulting a medical professional.

    Elderly patients
There are no specific dosage recommendations for elderly patients. Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor or dentist, the dosage given for adults applies.

    Method of use
    For rinsing or gargling.
Hexoral is used undiluted after meals. In order for it to work properly, you should not eat or drink for the next few minutes.
Hexoral must not be mixed with other medicines.
For local treatment in the mouth, Hexoral can also be applied to the affected areas with cotton swabs or swabs.
Hexoral is only suitable for use in the mouth and throat area and must not be swallowed. Therefore, Hexoral should only be used if the patient can suppress the swallowing reflex and is able to spit out the solution after rinsing or gargling.

    Duration of use
Do not use Hexoral for longer than 10 days without medical or dental advice. The total duration of the treatment is determined by the treating doctor or dentist.
If you still have symptoms after 15 days of treatment, you should consult a doctor or dentist again.
