Loperamide acute 20 tablets

The active ingredient loperamide hydrochloride contained in Loperamide "ratiopharm" acute film tablets is a strong and long-lasting anti-diarrheal agent that inhibits the disturbed intestinal movements by directly affecting the intestinal wall (antiperistaltic effect). In addition, the state of tension in the intestinal wall and the sphincter muscle is increased.

Loperamide "ratiopharm" acute film-coated tablets are suitable for adults and children over 12 years of age for the symptomatic treatment of short-lasting (acute) diarrhea if other measures (diet, replacement of water and salts) have not been able to control it.

If you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 2 days, contact your doctor.

Treatment with Loperamide "ratiopharm" acute film tablets for more than 2 days may only be carried out with a doctor's prescription and follow-up.

Contraindications

Loperamide "ratiopharm" acute film tablets must not be taken

• if you are allergic to loperamide hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in section 6),
• in case of diarrhea accompanied by blood in the stool and/or high fever,
• in acute episodes of chronic inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis),
• diarrhea that occurs during or after taking antibiotics (pseudomembranous colitis),
• in bacterial intestinal inflammation caused by pathogens penetrating the intestinal wall.
• Loperamide "ratiopharm" acute film-coated tablets must not be taken if a slowdown in bowel activity is to be avoided. Possible risks include intestinal obstruction and enlargement of the colon. If constipation, almost complete/complete blockage of the bowel and/or bloating of the abdomen occurs, you must stop taking Loperamide "ratiopharm" acute film-coated tablets immediately.
• by children under the age of 12
• in chronic diarrheal diseases. These may only be treated with loperamide hydrochloride on the doctor's orders and after monitoring the course of the disease.

interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines:

• ritonavir (used to treat HIV and AIDS)
• quinidine (used to treat heart rhythm problems and malaria)
• verapamil (used to treat abnormal heart rhythms)
• desmopressin (used to control thirst and urine production in patients with diabetes insipidus)
• itraconazole or ketoconazole (used to treat fungal infections)
• Gemfibrozil (used to treat high cholesterol)

Drugs that reduce gastrointestinal motility can increase the effects of loperamide hydrochloride.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.

Pregnancy
Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Your doctor will then decide whether you can take Loperamide "ratiopharm" acute film-coated tablets.

Breast- feeding
Small amounts of loperamide hydrochloride can pass into breast milk. It is therefore not recommended to take Loperamide "ratiopharm" acute film-coated tablets while breast-feeding.

application

The recommended dose is:
Age: Adults 
Initial dose: 2 tablets
Repeat dose: 1 tablet Maximum
daily dose: 4 tablets

Age: Adolescents between 12 and 18 years
First dose: 1 tablet
Repeat dose: 1 tablet Maximum
daily dose: 4 tablets

At the beginning of the treatment of acute diarrhea, the first dose is taken. Thereafter, the repeat dose should be taken after each loose stool. The recommended maximum daily dose must not be exceeded.
If your symptoms have not improved after 2 days, consult a doctor immediately.
Loperamide "ratiopharm" acute film-coated tablets must not be taken by children under the age of 12.

A daily dose of 4 film-coated tablets must not be exceeded, since severe constipation can occur.

Dose adjustment is not necessary for elderly patients or patients with kidney damage.

If you have liver dysfunction, you may only take Loperamide "ratiopharm" acute film tablets if prescribed by a doctor.

Method of administration:
The film-coated tablets should be swallowed whole with a little liquid (eg 1 glass of water).

Duration of use:
Loperamide "ratiopharm" acute film tablets must not be taken for more than 2 days without a doctor's prescription and follow-up, as severe constipation can occur.

• Narrowing of the pupils (miosis)
• Intestinal obstruction (ileus, including ileus caused by paralysis), chronic constipation with enlargement of the large intestine (megacolon), burning or tingling of the tongue
• bloated stomach
• Skin reactions with blistering (Stevens Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, erythema multiforme), sudden swelling of the mucous membranes, especially in the face and limbs, involving the muscles and larynx, possibly with shortness of breath and difficulty swallowing (angioedema), nettle rash, itching
• urinary retention
• fatigue

Some of the reported side effects (gastrointestinal pain and discomfort, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, fatigue, drowsiness, constipation, gas, headache, drowsiness or dizziness) are common symptoms associated with diarrhea. These symptoms are often difficult to distinguish from the side effects of the drug.
